Learn about the various art movements that shaped modern art. This course will teach you about Impressionism. Fauvism. Surrealism. These movements are often classified according to their medium. Fauvism is a movement that uses unusual colors and bold brushwork. From the French word for "wild beast", "Fauve" is the name. Henri Matisse (andre derain), Maurice de Vlaminck and Kees vanDongen were some of the most important artists. Kathe Kolwitz and Wassily Kanninsky were also part of this movement. Pablo Picasso was also a major contributor to the movement.

Post Impressionism

Post Impressionism is a late 19th century art movement characterized by a wide variety of unique artistic styles. These styles were created to counter the Impressionist movement's visual qualities. They included works ranging in style from the Neo-Impressionism Georges Seurat up to the rich Symbolism Paul Gauguin. These works often centred on the subjective vision and feelings of the artist.

Cubism

Cubism is an art form in which painters use geometric methods to simplify and analyze objects. This method simplifies the subject matter and highlights the different viewpoints of the viewers. Cubism isn’t about cutting down real objects into cubes. Rather, it’s about geometrization. Using a geometric form such as a square, conic and cylinder to present reality, this movement is different from other art movements. This method also helps to find the truth in art by revealing the details within a picture.

Fauvism

Fauvism, a brief-lived but significant art movement, challenged stylistic conventions. Although its influence lasted only five years, it was well-known and widely used by artists. It was met with stiff competition by newcomers and artists. Many of the top artists were forced to adapt again. Picasso's influence caused Matisse to adopt a simpler style for his paintings. Cezanne forced the movement back to its geometrical ethos.

Surrealism

Surrealism is an art form that explores the subconscious, often using cryptic meanings. Although Surrealism is primarily literary in its beginnings, many of its most famous artists like Max Ernst have employed a range of styles. Surrealist artwork was well-known for their juxtapositions of seemingly unrelated objects or forms.

Abstract Expressionism

Abstract Expressionism was a movement that eschewed traditional realism and instead emphasized the expression of feelings in abstract paintings. This movement was led by painters but other art forms were welcomed to participate. During its heyday, the movement was dominated by male artists and was often misogynistic, homophobic, and racially restricted. Despite these negative characteristics, many women artists were still producing art during this period. Women were not mentioned in literature on abstract expressionism or textbooks.

Photorealism

Photorealism can be described as a style of art that draws inspiration from many different photographic images. Subjects can range from portraits to local signage to simple household appliances. Artists who use this style of art see it as a way to document a rapidly changing world. In the 1970s and 1980s, there was a dramatic decline in local retail businesses. The big-box store boom was also beginning. These stores would go on to grow and become major corporations. Photorealism was a popular style used by many artists to preserve American history.
